"In October 1979, when the government
which I headed handed over power to a democratically elected
government, I had no doubt in my mind that I had done with
politics, at least, at the level of active participation.
Many people may still recall the hand of
fate that propelled me to the leadership of Nigeria, against
my personal wish in 1976. At the end of that period, it made
no sense to even imagine that I would find myself at the helm
of affairs again. However, the events of the past sixteen
years culminating in the changes foisted on Nigeria in mid
1998 affected me deeply. Having been a Head of State, I was
more hurt because I knew things could be done differently.
I could not sit by, watching things deteriorate terribly without
lifting a finger".
